Snowy Owl
Snowy Owl
by Gessler Nature Photography
Because owls are a species that are very sensitive to disturbance, I rarely ever seek to get close to one, especially in the winter, but occasionally, if I am really lucky, one comes to me! I was out taking pictures in a snowstorm when one of our local Northern Pygmy Owls soundlessly flew by, landing high in the apple tree next to me. I stood, entranced, as the snow continued to fall softly around me. The fierce little owl, no bigger than a pop can, had no interest in me, but rather was laser focused on the hunt. As the storm progressed, the snow got heavier and heavier, and the lighting and visibility changed quickly, lending to some surreal images of this stunning little owl. It was truly a magical moment in time.
